Great choice!

"Solar Symbiosis" is a pioneering project to use the Atacama Desert's most abundant resource: its sunlight. This project aims to develop innovative solar-powered irrigation and climate control systems tailored for arid and semi-arid agriculture. By leveraging the extreme solar intensity in the Atacama, we plan to create sustainable, energy-efficient farming practices that can be applied in similar climates worldwide, addressing the urgent need for water-efficient agriculture.

Why It's Important:

As water scarcity becomes a pressing issue globally, the need for innovative irrigation solutions has never been greater. The Atacama Desert, with its harsh conditions, serves as the perfect laboratory for developing technologies that minimize water use while maximizing agricultural yield. These solutions can potentially revolutionize farming in drought-prone regions, ensuring food security and resilience against climate change.

What’s needed?

  • System Size: 5kW

Cost: $1.20 per watt (a mid-range price point)

Total Cost for PV Panels: $6,000

  • Type: Submersible pump suitable for well or surface water extraction, capable of pumping water to a height of 30 meters (approximately 100 feet) with a flow rate sufficient for irrigating a modest area of farmland.

    Cost: $3,500

This includes the pump, motor, and controller optimized for solar operation.

  • Piping, Fittings, and Water Distribution Infrastructure: $2,500

Water Storage Tank: 10,000-liter capacity, suitable for storing pumped water for daily irrigation needs: $1,500

Solar Panel Mounting Structures, Wiring, and Miscellaneous Supplies: $1,500

  • Cost: $1,500

This covers the setup of a basic remote monitoring system to track system performance and scheduled maintenance visits.

  • $15,000

This cost is inclusive of all necessary components to establish a fully functional solar-powered irrigation system capable of supporting sustainable agricultural practices on a modest scale. It assumes the project is implemented in an area with direct access to a water source suitable for pumping and sufficient solar exposure to power the system efficiently.
